Most Popular Online Poker Games

Though Texas Hold’em poker is by far the most popular variant of online poker, there is a surprisingly wide range of other variants available on the Web. Switching from one variant to another can however be tricky, as each comes with its own set of rules and requires its own strategy. Though broadening your poker horizons can be rewarding and entertaining, it is certainly worth brushing up on the intricacies of each game before you dive in.

1. Texas Hold’em Poker

The most famous online poker game is Texas Holdem. The game revolves around strategic betting and savvy decision-making and is played over a series of hands. In Texas Hold’em players compete for a common pot, which is rewarded to the player with the strongest hand at the end of each round. To start with, players are dealt hole two cards before being invited to bet. The dealer then deals three community cards face up, after which another round of betting occurs. The dealer then deals a further two cards face up, each of which is followed by a round of betting. If there are two or more players still in contention for the pot, the players flip their cards and the strongest five-card hand wins.

2. Five-card Draw

Another fairly popular version of the game is the Five-card Draw, which can be quite easily learnt by new players. After placing a small bet, or ante, into the pot, each player is dealt five cards face down. A round of betting then occurs after which players can trade in one, two or three of their hole cards for new ones. Following a second round of betting, players must show their hands; the strongest hand wins the pot.

3. Limit Seven-card Stud

Perhaps the most popular variant of the game historically speaking, Limit Seven-Card Stud has become more rare since the domination of Texas Hold’Em, though it still requires all the skill and strategic thinking of its more popular rival. Similar to Five-card Draw, players of the Seven-card Stud variant of online poker must place an ante before play commences. After this has happened, each player will be dealt one card face up and two hole cards. The player possessing the lowest up card must place a bring-in bet before betting continues. A fourth, fifth, sixth (face up) and seventh card (face down) are all dealt with a round of betting occurring after each card is dealt. The winner of the pot is the player with the strongest five-card hand.

Omaha Hold’Em
Similar in several respects to Texas Hold’em, Omaha involves each player receiving four hole cards. Players can then use two of their hole cards and any three from the flop in order to make the best five-card poker hand.

Though to amateurs, poker may be synonymous with Texas Hold’em, this is most certainly not the case. There are many poker playing tips and mastering the different variants takes a great deal of time, but for those with a sense of adventure, it can represent a very exciting challenge.
